The importance of Duplex Ultrasound examination of the lower extremities cannot be underestimated. Careful mapping of the lower extremity venous system prior to treatment is essential to a good clinical outcome. While many patients present with large, clinically obvious bulging varicose veins other individuals may have significant “silent” large vein disease (reflux), which can only be detected by duplex ultrasound vein mapping. Duplex ultrasound not only provides a detailed picture of your venous system, but can show abnormal direction blood flow (reflux) in diseased veins. Successful treatment of leg veins requires accurate diagnosis with treatment of abnormal large veins followed by progressive treatment of smaller “cosmetic veins.”
Successful vein treatment is always related to the orderly elimination of larger refluxing varicose veins followed by foam microsclerotherapy or laser treatment of smaller cosmetic veins. Your duplex ultrasound exam is completely painless and will take about 30 minutes to perform. At the conclusion of your exam your physician will explain the results and outline a course of treatment to maximize your outcome. Remember, proper diagnosis is essential to proper treatment and superb clinical results. We look forward to treating you.
An example of a duplex imaging procedure and an example of a scan shows the vein with the blood flow direction indicated by the colored space inside the vein wall. The surrounding tissues look like images on weather radar. When the venous duplex test is performed, multiple pictures are taken to document the status of the vein and to select the optimal treatment plan for your veins. Duplex testing is often performed at the time of various vein treatments as well as in follow up of the results of that treatment.
