There are several non-surgical options for treatment of skin cancer. These are new and are not indicated in all cases. However, if the tumor is superficial and the general medical condition of the patient permits, these options can be very useful.
Immunotherapy of tumors involves use of the drug immiquimod. The cream is applied for several months and can cause mild skin irritation but it can be remarkably effective.
Photodynamic
therapy (PDT) of precancerous lesions is an accepted, FDA-approved
procedure. PDT is now being used to treat both Basal Cell and
Squamous Cell Carcinoma. In this treatment, the photosensitizing
drug is applied and the skin is later exposed the light source.
The photochemical reaction that ensues destroys the tumor
cells. Treatment must be tailored to the individual and several
treatments are needed. Dr. Elliott has extensive experience
in this treatment modality and we are proud to offer PDT along
with more traditional therapy for skin cancer at the Center
for Laser Surgery.
Please call for a consultation about the innovative procedures.
