Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy

Replacing hormones that decline with age has been shown to have broad anti aging and anti disease effect on the body in general and the skin in particular.

The central nervous system (CNS) regulates the pituitary gland, which secretes hormones to regulate tissues that, in turn, produce substances that provide feed back to the hypothalamic-pituitary axis.

In humans, aging is associated with a decrease in the gonadal production of estrogen in females (menopause) and testosterone in males (andropause); the adrenal production of dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) and DHEA sulfate (DHEA-S) (adrenopause); and a decrease in the activity of growth hormone (GH)/insulin-like growth factor (IGF) axis (somatopause). Individual hormone replacement regimens are developed as a strategy to delay or prevent some of the consequences of aging caused by these declining hormone levels.

Distribution of Fat in Aging

There are two kinds of body fat, central fat and peripheral fat. The central fat around the waist and abdominal area is most often noted in men and is associated with a number of diseases, including atherosclerosis, type 2 diabetes, and syndrome X, which is characterized by high blood pressure, insulin resistance, unfavorable cholesterol profile, and premature atherosclerosis. Peripheral fat on the arms, legs, or hips is less related to health problems and is generally estrogen sensitive and seen in women rather than men.
