What Causes Wrinkles?
Dynamic wrinkles are caused by contractions of the delicate underlying facial muscles every time you smile, laugh or frown. The more emotion you show the deeper these wrinkles and lines are likely to be. Left untreated these lines may become permanent.
How Do Botox Injections Treat Wrinkles?
Frown lines, crows feet, and forehead lines can be dramatically softened or eliminated with Botox injections. This procedure, known as a cosmetic chemodenervation, uses Botox injections to temporarily relax the muscles which cause these skin wrinkles to form, improving or eliminating the appearance of worry lines, frown lines, laugh lines, crow's feet and other wrinkles of the face and neck.
How Does Botox Work?
Botox, a neurotoxin, blocks impulses from the nerve to the facial muscles that are related to expression lines. Botox relaxes the muscles so they do not contract. After treatment, the overlying skin becomes smooth and unwrinkled, while the untreated facial muscles contract in a normal fashion, allowing normal facial expression to be unaffected.
How Long Does Botox Last?
The Botox molecules are slowly broken down by our bodies own enzymes into harmless amino acids, and gradually the muscles in the treated area will regain function, allowing them to contract. While the breakdown rate of Botox is variable and dependent on individual physiology, the effects of Botox injections generally last between 3-6 months. With regularly scheduled repeat injections over time, the treated muscles will weaken due to inactivity, and many people find that they need fewer injections than when first beginning Botox treatments.
Is Botox® Safe?
Botox injections have been used safely and effectively for over fifteen years to treat many ophthalmic and neurological disorders. Every year hundreds of thousands of patients receive Botox treatments for a variety of conditions and it is now an accepted safe and popular treatment for reversing the visible signs of aging as well as excessive sweating (hyperhydrosis). In the hands of well trained, experienced injectors, the cosmetic use of Botox has shown no signs of short-term or long-term risk to the patient.
